The Wisconsin Department of Revenue said Thursday it’s returned $11.6 million in unclaimed property to its rightful owners since starting a new program 3 months ago.
The DOR took over the Unclaimed Property program and actively tries to track down the owners of forgotten savings and checking accounts, insurance policies, dividends and other property.
The state automatically sends a check to people with property valued less than $2,000.
There are still 441 people the state is trying to find who have property worth more than $2,000. It sent letters for 441 outstanding claims worth more $3.6 million, but the owners didn’t respond.
