APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) – Appleton Police say two children unintentionally started a fire at a vacant apartment in the city.

The fire department was called at 1:55 p.m. Sunday to the 2700 block of West Fourth Street. People in nearby apartments told officials they saw the boys running away shortly after the fire.

Appleton Police say the 11-year-old and 8-year-old boys were trying to build a campfire in the basement of the empty apartment. The Grand Chute Fire Department put the flames out using a water extinguisher.

The Appleton Fire Department ventilated the apartment to remove smoke. No one was hurt. There was minor smoke and fire damage in the apartment.

Police say that firefighters will teach the boys about fire safety.
