INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)  – A live alligator was found on Interstate 465 Sunday afternoon.

According to the Indiana State Police, a live alligator was found on I-465 southbound near the 48 mile marker just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers initially responded to reports of a live alligator on the shoulder of I-465 southbound. After arriving on scene, troopers discovered  a nearly two foot long alligator alive, but with injuries.

ISP said in order to stop the alligator from running out into traffic one of the troopers picked it up.

However, the alligator did succumb to its injuries and died before animal control arrived on scene.

ISP said that the alligator’s injuries are believed to have been from falling out or being thrown from a moving vehicle.

Anyone who with information about who may have owned the alligator is asked to contact State Police at 317-899-8577.
