Gibraltar remembers flight student as “remarkable young woman”

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Gibraltar Area School District has released a statement on a young flight student killed in a plane crash at Peninsula State Park.

Olivia Dahl, 16, was a senior at Gibraltar High School.

“She was a remarkable young woman. Olivia was highly intellectual, loved looking for unique learning opportunities, and stood out in our band as an extraordinary bassoon player,” reads a statement from the school district.

The district has counselors on hand to help students who are struggling with Olivia’s death.

Dahl and 69-year-old pilot Ralph Keller were killed Sunday while attempting to land at Ephraim Airport. Keller and Olivia were returning from Dahl’s flight lesson in Green Bay.

The Door County sheriff’s office says it appears the pilot was making his approach to the airport when “something went wrong.”

A witness on a bike trail in Peninsula State Park located the wreckage to the west of Highland Road.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB are investigating the crash.
