HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (WBAY) – Well this is awkward. Steven Avery and Lynn Hartman are featured in a two-part exclusive interview on the “Dr. Phil” show Monday and Tuesday. But they’ve reportedly already broken off their engagement.
In a video posted on Dr. Phil’s website before the first part aired, it was revealed that Hartman, a legal secretary, visited Avery three times at Waupun Correctional Institution. It also hinted at some static in the relationship.
“I’m feeling agitated because I haven’t heard from Steven,” Hartman said.
Hartman admits she binge watched the Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer” and decided to contact Avery afterward.
It also teases a “surprise” phone call from Avery, in his first television interview since the December 2015 release of “Making a Murderer.” The Emmy Award-winning series chronicles the Manitowoc County trials of Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey for the murder of freelance photographer Teresa Halbach.
Regarding his pending nuptials, Avery tells Dr. Phil, “I want to wait until I’m out and I don’t think that’ll be too long; right around the corner.”
Avery, who claims he is innocent of killing Halbach, is appealing his 2007 murder conviction with the help of high profile attorney Kathleen Zellner, who is known for fighting wrongful convictions.
Dassey’s conviction has been overturned by a federal judge. The State of Wisconsin is appealing that ruling.
The second part of the interview with Avery and Lynn Hartman airs Tuesday at 3 p.m. on WBAY-TV 2.
