As the largest mall in America announces it’s closing its doors Thanksgiving Day, Bay Park Square Mall in Ashwaubenon is embracing Thanksgiving shopping and will be open from 6 to 11 P.M. on the holiday.
Fox River Mall in Grand Chute said it’s still deciding whether they’ll open or close.
Managers at those malls were not available to talk to WBAY about their hours Thursday.
But the managers at the smaller Northland Mall in Appleton were proud to tell us they’ll remain closed on the holiday, again.
“I feel like these people need to be home with their families,” said Northland Mall Property Manager Angie Walker.
“I have eight staff here,” St. Patrick’s Gift & Books Patricia DeMarco said. “All of the times I feel bad that were open on certain other days like 4th of July and Labor Day so I’m the one coming into work so I can give the staff time to be with their family.”
Northland Mall is hopeful that Mall of America closing this Thanksgiving will start a trend for other malls.
“December is such a busy month anyway,” Walker said. “This year there’s five weeks it’s plenty of time for people to be out shopping.”
“It’s one of the only holidays that there isn’t a bunch of hoopla, you don’t have to buy presents for and go places to celebrate, you get around with family and friends and be thankful for what you have,” said DeMarco.
Jones-Dengler Marketing, which tracks holiday shopping trends and runs the Black Friday blog BestBlackFriday.com, says it’s found more than 40 national and regional retailers that will keep their doors closed on Thanksgiving Day, including Costco, Home Depot, Marshalls, Menards and Sam’s Club:
