GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Some of the top anglers are in Green Bay for the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit’s World Walleye Championship.
The three-day event kicks off Thursday morning at Metro Park Boat Launch.
Fifty teams have earned a highly coveted spot in the championship. They’re competing for more than $80,000 in cash prizes.
The teams are made up of the top point accumulating anglers from the 2015 Masters Walleye Circuit season, which included 11 regular season qualifiers in eight different states on a diverse selection of rivers, inland lakes, and Great Lakes fisheries.
The action will be filmed for Federation Angler TV.
The Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau says it’s a great way to highlight the area’s fishery.
“When they’re showcased around the country that helps us promote greater Green Bay in a little bit of a different way, a different fashion because leisure travelers do bring their boats on vacation so there is that aspect of it, and if they see Green Bay has a great place to fish and we have boat launches for them to use they’ll come here with their boat and their family,” said Brenda Krainik.
The championship does give a boost to the Green Bay economy. It’s expected to add about $250,000 to the local economy.
