MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is starting a new program to help people recognize the signs when a veteran is suicidal.

Secretary John Scocos announced the Zero Veteran Suicides Initiative.

It will train relatives, nursing home staff, volunteers and others with firsthand contact with vets to notice the signs and intervene when they suspect someone is thinking about suicide.

Veterans accounted for 18 percent of all suicides in the U.S. in 2014.
