Gov. Walker addresses proposal for new prison in Brown County

Green Bay Correctional Institution Prison sign - not good

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – During a stop in Green Bay on Thursday, Gov. Scott Walker responded to a recent push by some local lawmakers for a new prison in the Green Bay area.

State Rep. Dave Steffen (R-Howard) has proposed building an entirely new prison somewhere in Brown County, saying that building a new facility could be less expensive than bringing Green Bay Correctional Institution up to code.

“Green Bay Correctional, which has been–more than 100 years old and Waupun which has a similar timeframe on it– it would be worth looking at in the budget, not only for the positive impact it may have on this area, but also long term,” Gov. Walker said. “Just asking looking at would a more state-of-the-art facility help even in terms of reducing cost.”

Gov. Walker was in Green Bay for the sixth annual Manufacturing First Expo and Conference. It was held at the KI Convention Center. The event is one of the largest manufacturing-focused events in Wisconsin.
