Local officers wait tables at Red Robin to benefit Special Olympics

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A few local officers turned in their badges for trays on Thursday.

With the help of Special Olympics athletes, officers waited on hungry guests through Red Robin’s national “Tip a Cop.” It’s part of the annual law enforcement torch run campaign, in support of Special Olympics.

Organizers say while the event helps raise funds, it’s also about building relationships and support between officers and athletes.

“It kind of lets people see the officers in a different light,” said Matt Harper, Special Olympics regional director of development. “Seeing them having fun waiting and waitressing tables, interacting with the athletes. Then for the athletes, it’s huge as well for them to feel that support from law enforcement officers that they are there to support them and back them up. And the officers as well know that they are getting the support from the athletes.”

Officers were at 10 Red Robin restaurants. That included Green Bay, Appleton and Oshkosh locations.

Proceeds will go directly to programs in Wisconsin.
