BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – An 8-year-old moose that battled chronic health problems for much of his life died unexpectedly Tuesday at the NEW Zoo.
The zoo says Finnegan died peacefully in his favorite resting spot in his exhibit. He was born at the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo but spent the majority of his life in Milwaukee.
Finnegan arrived back at the NEW Zoo about a month ago. He was eating and behaving normally and showed no signs of illness earlier in the day, according to the zoo.
Finnegan had been treated for chronic dental and respiratory issues for many years. He was also underweight for most of his adult life. NEW Zoo says his chronic health problems likely contributed to his death.
A necropsy, which is an autopsy performed on animals, will determine what factors led to his death.
