State Volleyball: Local teams claim gold and silver

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A fantastic finish to a fantastic season. Neenah and Howards Grove claimed gold at the 2016 State Volleyball tournament, while Notre Dame and Lourdes proudly take home the silver ball.

The Neenah Rockets claimed their first gold ball since 1978 with a 3-0 win over Burlington.

“Coming into this game we were really mentally prepared and we all really wanted it so bad, because we knew what we were capable of the whole entire season. So now to see it pay off is a really great feeling,” said senior Hope Werch.

Sophomore Addie Barnes said, “To accomplish what we’ve been working for all season and working together, because we all wanted this, it’s so awesome.”

Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay took on Catholic Memorial, the team that knocked them out of the tournament last year.

The Tritons fought hard, but the Crusaders were too much. Catholic Memorial wins 3-0.

The Tritons win the silver ball.

Howards Grove was too much to handle for Lourdes, winning 3-0 to claim the D3 gold ball.

This is Howards Grove’s first state volleyball title in 40 years.

“Everyone from Sheboygan came and supported us and I think it means the world to us, because we’ll come back in that gym years later and we’ll still be able to look at that banner and that gold ball and say we were a part of that team that made it to state, that won that gold ball, and then a bunch of memories will follow along with that. So it means so much,” said senior Samantha Yancy.
