WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBAY) – President-elect Donald Trump has named Republican National Committee Chairman and Wisconsin native Reince Priebus as his chief of staff.

Conservative media executive Stephen Bannon, who served as Trump’s campaign CEO, will also serve as Trump’s chief strategist and senior counselor, according to an email from the Senior White House Leadership Team.

The email states Bannon and Priebus will work to make the federal government more efficient, effective and productive. They’ll work with Vice President-elect Mike Pence to help lead the transition process in the run-up to Inauguration Day.

The moves are Trump’s first as he sets about putting together his administration.

“Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory,” Trump said in a statement. “Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”

Priebus, who was raised in Kenosha, said he’s grateful for the opportunity to serve so that he can “work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism. [Trump] will be a great President for all Americans.”

In selecting Priebus, Trump is turning to a Washington veteran with deep ties to Republican leadership, particularly House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Priebus has served as RNC chairman since 2011. Before that, he served as chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin. He also worked as Wisconsin’s First Congressional District Chairman, State Party Treasurer and First Vice Chair.

Bannon ran the conservative website Breitbart before joining Trump’s presidential campaign during the general election. Bannon said their successful partnership will work to help Trump achieve his agenda as president.

Neither Bannon nor Priebus has significant governing experience.

Gov. Scott Walker and Speaker Ryan took to Twitter to congratulate Priebus.

Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) released the following statement regarding the news that President-Elect Donald Trump selected Reince Priebus as his chief of staff.

“The nation’s next President has made an excellent choice. I don’t know anyone who works as hard as Reince, is as forward thinking and loves our country more.

“I have known Reince since our College Republican days at UW-Whitewater. I couldn’t be more proud of the work he has done for the conservative movement. He will be an amazing chief of staff who will work the President-Elect to get things done in Washington.

“Wisconsin congratulates you, Reince!  We’re confident you will help make America great again.”
