NEW LONDON, Wis. (WBAY) – A 19-month-old girl hit by a van in New London Monday evening is out of the hospital.

Police Chief Jeffrey Schlueter says the toddler’s mother was adjusting a car seat in her vehicle, thinking her daughter was standing beside her. She didn’t realize the toddler started walking into the street.

A 74-year-old New London man driving a cargo van on Division Street thought he hit something in the road and stopped, and realized he hit the child.

The accident scene at Division and Bruce streets was three blocks from ThedaCare New London Hospital, and the mother picked up her daughter and rushed her to the hospital before police arrived.

The driver of the cargo van waited for police and is cooperating with the investigation, Schlueter said.
