MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WBAY) – Coast Guard officials are telling people to avoid piers and breakwalls with the windy weather this weekend.
There have been an abnormally high number of foul-weather related deaths in Lake Michigan this year, according to the Coast Guard Lake Michigan Sector. That’s why they’re telling people who are participating in waterfront activities to be careful.
The high winds can create 10-foot waves, which can be dangerous. Already this year, the Coast Guard says they’ve responded to numerous cases of people being swept off of a wall or pier by rough seas.
People are being asked to stay a safe distance from the water.
“While the large waves are always impressive to watch, the safety of the public remains our number one priority,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Leanne Lusk, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan.
