GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Fire stations are hanging an annual reminder to take extra precautions in the kitchen this Thanksgiving.

Fire departments in Green Bay and Appleton are hanging wreaths outside their fire stations as an awareness campaign for holiday fire safety.

For every residential fire they respond to between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, firefighters will change one green bulb to a red one.

The cities see about a dozen home fires during the holiday season. They say this is the most dangerous time of the year for house fires, and careless cooking is usually the number-one cause.

“You’ve got Thanksgiving and Christmas, lots of people cooking in the kitchen. They get distracted. A lot of our fires start from food on the stove. So it’s just that time of year when things kind of amp us for us a little bit, and we want to try and get the message out there to bring that down,” Lt. Cody Johnson, Green Bay Metro Fire Department, said.

Firefighters also remind people who have a natural Christmas tree in their home that it’s important to water them regularly.
