Dry carpet cleaning powders recalled for bacteria

WASHINGTON, DC (WBAY) – Six brands of dry carpet cleaning powders are being recalled because they may contain harmful bacteria, which could pose a danger to people with weakened immune systems.

The powders are sprinkled on carpets and rugs, then vacuumed, to clean and deodorize them. The recall affects the following brands:

  • Arm & Hammer
  • Capture
  • Healthy Home
  • Oreck
  • Resista
  • Riccar

They were sold nationwide since July 2015, in kits or individual containers of various sizes. For a complete list of packages and lot numbers, click here.

Though the general public with healthy immune systems may not be affected, the bacteria can cause respiratory or other infections in people with weaker immune systems — a group which can include infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions or on certain medications.

Consumers should stop using them immediately and contact the manufacturer, Milliken & Company, for a replacement. Click here and select the “Register” button, or call toll-free 1-888-770-7142 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central.
