WASHINGTON, DC (WBAY) – The US Navy says a data breach gave someone access to sensitive information about 134,386 current and former sailors, including their names and Social Security numbers.
The Navy was notified late last month that a contractor’s laptop was compromised. The contractor worked for Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES)
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and HPES confirmed Wednesday the information was “accessed by unknown individuals.” So far there’s no evidence that information has been misused.
“We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach,” Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke said.
The Navy is contacting sailors by phone, letter and email to give them details about what happened. It’s also reviewing options for credit monitoring services for the sailors.
“The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously,” Burke said. “This is a matter of trust for our Sailors.”
